Welcome to sub-minimum keyboard brightness.

Midnight Keyboard is the first macOS utility for Apple Silicon that enables keyboard backlight brightness levels below the hardcoded minimums in macOS. The default lowest brightness offered by Apple has always bordered on blinding in a dark room when you're working with low or reference-level display brightness. Finally, you can see your keyboard keys without being bright and distracting at night.

FAQ

Questions & answers

macOS locks the keyboard backlight to a minimum brightness value that you can't go below through normal controls. Under the hood, the backlight is driven by a PWM (pulse-width modulation) signal, which means the LED flickers on and off thousands of times per second. The ratio of on-time to off-time determines how bright it looks. Midnight Keyboard works by sending carefully timed fade commands that hold the backlight at PWM duty cycles lower than the value macOS clamps to. Think of it like gently easing a dimmer switch past a built-in stop that Apple put in place.
A small amount of flicker is normal and expected at sub-minimum levels. Because macOS doesn't expose direct write access to the PWM hardware, Midnight Keyboard achieves low brightness by rapidly oscillating fade-up and fade-off commands at a precise interval. Holding the backlight at a value between two PWM steps means it can occasionally drift one step brighter or dimmer before the next correction lands. The effect is usually imperceptible, but it can become slightly visible at the very lowest settings or if your Mac is under heavy CPU load. If the flicker bothers you, try nudging the slider one or two ticks higher. There's usually a sweet spot where the brightness is still well below the macOS minimum but the signal stays stable.
Midnight Keyboard works on any Apple Silicon MacBook with a backlit keyboard, including all M1, M2, M3, and M4 models (Air and Pro). It requires macOS 13 Ventura or later. We recommend using the free 3-night trial to confirm everything works smoothly on your specific machine before purchasing. We don't currently have a timeline for Intel-based Mac support, but drop us a line if you'd like to see it. It helps us gauge demand.
Negligible impact. Midnight Keyboard uses virtually zero CPU when holding a brightness level because the fade commands are tiny system calls. Running the keyboard at a lower brightness than stock actually saves a small amount of power compared to the macOS default minimum, since the LEDs are spending less time in the on state.
Yes. When macOS auto-brightness adjusts the keyboard backlight, Midnight Keyboard respects those changes and re-applies your sub-minimum offset. You can also choose to override auto-brightness entirely and lock the backlight to your preferred level.
If you purchased through the Mac App Store, refunds are handled by Apple. For direct purchases, we offer a no-questions-asked refund within 14 days. Just email us and we'll sort it out.
